Color matching is an imprecise science that is heavily dependent on the experience of the painter. Paint color matching is facilitated by locating the OEM color code, which is usually on the vehicle's compliance plate that is usually located on the frame of the driver's side door. However, manufacturers may place the color code in a specific location that may be different from the driver's side door jam. The color code can also be determined from the VIN, which will have an associated OEM color code provided by each manufacturer. Since the color code format differs by model make, it is important to a painter to have the make, year, and VIN to determine the appropriate color to match existing paint.

It is not always possible to match colors precisely since since the expressed color may represent the composite color of primer, top coat, and clear coat layers of paint, assuming the OEM specifications represent a tri-coat process application. Furthermore, 'metallic', 'metallic pearl', and silver ... among other colors ... are often difficult to match. For colors that are difficult to match, we strongly recommend that the owner provide a paint sample, if possible.

WASHING: New paint and finish need to dry and harden, and one should take care washing it for a minimum of three months after painting. A very mild car wash solution BY HAND with a soft cloth or sponge to wash and a chamois to dry can be done anytime after painting, BUT WAIT to wash in automated car washes for at least 3 months.
WAXING: The curing, ... i.e., drying and hardening ... of new paint can vary depending on whether a paint is urethane-based paint or an enamel- or lacquer paint. In general, new painting precludes waxing of the newly painted area for at least 2-3 months.
